TL;DR: I read Burry's argument twice before writing this. He doesn't say the market falls next week. He says something harder to sit with. A record high can hide a weak foundation, and the recovery after a fall can take a very long time, which is a different kind of warning from a crash call.

What did Michael Burry actually say?

Burry says the S&P 500 closed at a record on October 6, and that the same hidden buildup sat under each of the 10 market tops of the past 40 years, according to Yahoo Finance. In his latest Substack post he calls that October 6 high unremarkable. Volume stayed light, and similar highs in June and August 2026 led only to brief pauses, per the same report.

The image comes from a post on X dated October 17, 2026. He wrote that under each of the ten market tops of the last 40 years, "one will find a caldera of lava underneath the placid S," per Gokhshtein, which quotes the post.

What is the supervolcano chart measuring?

It measures breadth, meaning how many stocks take part in a rally. Yahoo Finance reports that Burry's chart tracks market breadth, and that breadth keeps shrinking as fewer stocks carry the index higher.

That matters if you own an index fund. You may think you own 500 companies, but on a day when a handful of names do nearly all the lifting, you really own a few big bets with a lot of passengers along for the ride.

How long could a bad stretch last?

Burry points to a century of inflation-adjusted S&P 500 data. Yahoo Finance lists the episodes he cites, and the table below sets them out.

PeriodReal S&P 500 price returnWith reinvested dividends
    1929 to 1949About negative 58%Not reported
    1966 to 1982About negative 53%About negative 10%
    2000 peak to 2011 troughAbout negative 40%About negative 25%

Look at the right-hand column. Reinvesting dividends cuts the 1966 to 1982 loss from about 53% to about 10%. A warning about price alone overstates what a patient holder who reinvested actually lived through, even though it still describes a long stretch with little to show for it.

The same report notes that Panmure Liberum recently made what Yahoo calls Wall Street's most bearish call, a 5,000-point S&P 500 target for 2027. One bearish house isn't a consensus.

What has Burry done with his own money?

FinanceBuzz reports that Burry wrote on his Substack that markets are "within 0-9 months of a significant top," and that he moved nearly all his short exposure into Nasdaq-100 puts expiring April 2027 and VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) puts expiring June 2027, per FinanceBuzz. The same report says SMH gained more than 67% in 2026 and that the Magnificent Seven held roughly 34% of the S&P 500.

Those figures are FinanceBuzz's reading of his Substack, which I could not open myself. Weigh them accordingly.

Why does this matter to an accredited investor?

Because your portfolio probably has the same concentration he describes, and private holdings don't fix it by themselves. Private marks update slowly, so a drawdown shows up late rather than not at all. I wrote about what that delay does to illiquid positions in what happens to illiquid investments in a bear market. For how private valuations behave when the story is a hot one, see OpenAI at $852 Billion.

I signed off on more than a thousand QA jobs on a submarine, and the habit that stuck was checking the structure under the calm surface before I trusted the surface itself. Burry is telling you to check breadth. I'd add a second check. How much of your net worth can't you sell in year three?

    Common mistakes

The first mistake is treating a warning as a timetable. Burry's own window, per FinanceBuzz, is "within 0-9 months of a significant top," which is a range and not a date. Selling everything on his word is a bet on his timing, made with your money.

The second is copying his trade. Puts that expire in 2027 can lose their full cost if the market keeps rising, and they're his positions, sized for his book, not yours.

The third is ignoring what you already own. Many accredited investors hold a large index position and a few private deals, then call that diversified, when a quick count of their real exposure to the top ten stocks and to a single sector would say otherwise. Do that count before you read another headline.

    What should you watch next?

Watch breadth itself: how many stocks are making new highs against how many are falling, and whether volume rises on up days. Watch the Panmure Liberum target for any company that follows it. And watch your own liquidity, because that's the number you control.

    FAQ

What is Michael Burry's prediction for the stock market crash?

He argues the next bear market may last a long time, citing a century of inflation-adjusted S&P 500 data and a buildup he says sat under each of the last 10 market tops, per Yahoo Finance. The sources I could cite give no single crash date from him.

Is there likely to be a market crash in 2026?

Nobody can say, and I won't pretend to. Burry's warning and Panmure Liberum's 5,000-point 2027 target are two bearish views, not a forecast anyone can verify. Check your concentration and liquidity instead of guessing a date.

Does Burry say the market always falls after a record high?

No. Yahoo Finance reports that similar highs in June and August 2026 led only to brief pauses. His claim is that weak breadth sat under past tops, not that every record high ends badly.

    What to do today

Open your largest brokerage account and list your top ten holdings, including what your index funds hold inside them. If they add up to more than you expected, decide now how much of your portfolio you could not sell for three years, before a drawdown decides it for you.
