10-Year Yield Falls Below 5% as AI Stocks Sell Off
TL;DR: The trigger was Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META). The stock fell 7% after its results because its plan to issue non voting stock to fund AI spending revived concerns about its capital commitments…

What happened to stocks and bonds on October 22?
| Market | Move | Level |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 (cap-weighted) | down 1.2% | not reported |
| Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) | up 0.7% | not reported |
The equal-weight fund rose while the cap-weighted index fell, with about 320 S&P 500 stocks higher, according to Money Today.
Why did Treasuries rally on AI worries?
Investors wanted safety. Prices and yields move in opposite directions, so heavy buying pushed the yield down.
Is the move below 5% likely to hold?
Nobody can say yet.
The next test is the Fed, which holds a two-day meeting October 27 and 28, per the Federal Reserve's October calendar. If AI fears ease and money drifts back toward tech, the safety bid in bonds could fade fast.
What does a 5% Treasury mean for accredited investors?
It raises the bar for anything illiquid. When a Treasury pays close to 5% with no lockup and no sponsor risk, a private credit fund, syndication or evergreen vehicle has to show it pays you more for giving up your money. The same trade-off came up when the yield hit a two-decade high, in our earlier piece, why the 10-year Treasury yield at a two-decade high matters to you.
One day proves nothing, but it is worth asking any credit sponsor how its yield behaves if short rates drop.
A projected yield is a target, not a result. Ask for realized returns on full-cycle deals, and ask how much of the stated yield survives after fees. Liquidity deserves the same scrutiny, and The Liquidity Illusion in Evergreen PE Funds takes it up, while Partners Group's gating of its evergreen fund shows what a lockup looks like when many investors want out.
The selloff also matters if your equity exposure is concentrated. If a few large AI names drive your public portfolio, the S&P 500 may be a narrower bet than it looks.
Common mistakes after a one-day bond move
One close is not a trend.
A falling yield is also not good news for everyone. It signals fear as much as relief, because money moved into bonds only after investors sold something else.
The quietest error is setting a private deal's headline yield beside a Treasury yield and calling it a comparison. Fees, lockup and the chance of loss all sit between those two numbers, and they are different instruments until you price those in.
FAQ
Why are 10-year Treasury yields falling?
Investors sold AI-linked stocks after Meta's results and bought Treasuries for safety. Heavy bond buying pushes prices up and yields down.
Is the AI bubble bursting?
One day does not settle it. Thursday's selloff was sharp, with the cap-weighted S&P 500 down 1.2%, per Money Today. Whether it lasts depends on how companies fund their AI spending.
Why do tech stocks sell off?
This time the cause was funding. Meta fell 7% after its plan to issue non-voting stock to pay for AI spending revived concerns about its capital commitments, according to Yahoo Finance.
What to do today
Before you commit cash to any illiquid fund this week, write down the current Treasury yield next to the fund's net, after-fee realized return, and ask the sponsor in writing if there is no realized figure.
