FY 2026 Deficit Totaled $2 Trillion, Treasury Says
TL;DR: The Treasury's final fiscal 2026 statement puts the federal deficit at $2.0 trillion, the net of $7.4 trillion in spending and $5.4 trillion in revenue, according to the American Action Forum …

How big was the fiscal 2026 deficit?
About $2 trillion. Yahoo Finance puts the figure at $1.99 trillion, while the American Action Forum rounds to $2.0 trillion and estimates the deficit at 6.1% of GDP, up from 5.8% the year before. The GDP share is an estimate, since GDP gets revised.
| Measure | FY 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Deficit | $2.0 trillion | American Action Forum |
| Spending | $7.4 trillion | American Action Forum |
| Revenue | $5.4 trillion | American Action Forum |
| Change from FY 2025 | +$217 billion (12%) | American Action Forum |
| Debt held by the public | $32.4 trillion, about 100% of GDP | American Action Forum |
Revenue grew, just more slowly than spending.
Why does a federal deficit matter if you are pricing private deals?
The government has to sell debt to cover the gap, and that debt sets the floor for what you should demand from anything riskier.
So when a sponsor shows you a projected return, put the current 10-year Treasury yield next to it. Then subtract the fees and put a price on the lockup. None of that makes private markets a bad idea, but it makes the spread the whole question. The same test applies to the credit funds covered in Private Credit in 2026 and in the piece on the SEC's exam priority for private credit. The yield on offer has to pay you for the illiquidity, not just beat the Treasury.
Sponsors feel the same pressure. A sponsor that borrowed at much lower rates and has debt coming due will refinance at today's costs, so read the maturity schedule before you read the upside case.
Where did the money go?
Interest is the line to watch. The American Action Forum says interest payments on the national debt totaled $1.1 trillion, more than national defense, and that net interest was the third-largest federal expenditure behind Social Security and Medicare. Yahoo Finance likewise lists net interest on the debt at $1.1 trillion. That money pays for past borrowing and buys nothing new, which is the same squeeze a sponsor faces when a loan resets higher, only at a smaller scale.
Is this deficit historically large?
Yes. Yahoo Finance reports it is the third-largest in U.S. history, trailing only the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget calls it the largest deficit in our history outside of a war or recession.
Earlier coverage here dealt with the estimates: Federal Deficit Hits $2 Trillion in Fiscal 2026 and US Deficit Nears $2 Trillion as Debt and Rates Bite. What is new is that the number is final, and it landed $140 billion (8%) above the Congressional Budget Office's baseline, according to the American Action Forum.
What should you watch next?
Start with the next CBO update on net interest as a share of federal outlays, since that is where the cost of this borrowing shows up first. Watch the 10-year yield too, because every deal you look at gets compared with it. Then check the refinancing dates on anything you already own.
The CRFB says bringing deficits down to 3% of GDP would stabilize debt as a share of the economy, but nothing in the Treasury data says when, or whether, that happens. Nobody can say where yields go from here, and a deficit total is not a market-timing signal.
Common mistakes
The most common one is treating a record deficit as a reason to buy or sell something. The total says nothing about when a market will move.
The second is comparing a sponsor's projected return with a Treasury yield before subtracting fees and the cost of being locked up. Projected returns are marketing, so ask for realized returns from full-cycle deals.
FAQ
Is this the biggest deficit ever?
No, but it is close. It is the third-largest on record, behind 2020 and 2021, per Yahoo Finance. The CRFB calls it the largest outside a war or recession.
How much did the government pay in interest?
Interest payments on the national debt totaled $1.1 trillion, surpassing defense spending, according to the American Action Forum. Net interest was the third-largest federal expenditure, behind Social Security and Medicare.
What would it take to stabilize the debt?
The CRFB says cutting deficits to 3% of GDP, half the current level, would stabilize debt as a share of the economy. It does not say how or when that would happen.
What to do today
Pull up the last private deal deck you saved and ask the sponsor, in writing, what happens to the payments if rates stay where they are today. If you want a downside-first read on numbers like these each week, sign up for the free AIN briefing.
