Bitcoin's 61-Day Coinbase Discount: Are U.S. Buyers Gone?
TL;DR: Bitcoin has traded below its global price on Coinbase for 61 straight days, according to a November 6 post from Coinbase Markets as reported by 24/7 Wall St. The gap sits at 0.13%, in the bott…

The question for an accredited investor is whether that streak means American buyers have walked away. The evidence is mixed, and the size of the gap is the first reason to be careful.
What is the Coinbase premium, and what does 61 days of discount mean?
The premium compares prices on two exchanges. According to Yahoo Finance, it "reflects the difference between Bitcoin's price on Coinbase and its price on Binance, the largest offshore exchange." Coinbase is the main U.S. venue, so a persistent negative reading is often taken as a sign that American demand is soft.
A streak of 61 days sounds dramatic. A gap of 0.13% is not. Yahoo Finance notes that the tiny gap "may understate quiet over-the-counter buying by U.S." spot Bitcoin ETFs, which can acquire coins off the public order book and never show up in the premium.
What else is moving at the same time?
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $1.28 billion in the week ending November 6, per 24/7 Wall St. Yahoo Finance's version of the report adds that net assets in those funds fell to $96 billion, the lowest level in a month.
That is the stronger evidence of cooling U.S. appetite. Fund outflows are money leaving, while the premium is a price gap that can be bent by several things. The two readings agree on direction, though neither proves why investors are selling.
| Signal | Latest reading | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase premium | -0.13%, bottom 8% of two years | Coinbase Markets, via 24/7 Wall St. |
| Consecutive discount days | 61 (Coinbase Markets), 38 (CoinGlass, as of Oct. 31) | 24/7 Wall St. |
| Spot Bitcoin ETF flows | $1.28 billion out, week ending Nov. 6 | 24/7 Wall St. |
| Spot Bitcoin ETF net assets | $96 billion, lowest in a month | Yahoo Finance |
| Bitcoin price | $75,870, down 40% from all-time high | 24/7 Wall St. |
The two ETF figures describe the same funds from different angles. The flows table row shows one week of selling, and the net assets row shows where that left the total.
Why do sources count the streak differently?
Because each one measures a different thing. 24/7 Wall St. reports that CoinGlass "recorded 38 consecutive negative days as of October 31, while Coinbase Markets reported 61 days by November 6, because each source uses distinct price data and thresholds." Another outlet, a Cryptonews.net syndication of a blockchainreporter.net analysis, put the streak at 64 days on November 8. These are different counts of one phenomenon, and none of them is a clean official figure.
That analysis also argues that most of the gap's movement comes from the rate between Tether's USDT and the dollar rather than from American selling. Binance's main Bitcoin market is quoted in USDT, so a USDT that trades slightly under a dollar makes Coinbase look cheaper without anyone dumping coins. This is one outlet's analysis, and it deserves the same scrutiny as the headline it challenges.
Has a long discount marked a bottom before?
Sometimes it has, though history is not a forecast. 24/7 Wall St. reports that CoinGlass's record stretch lasted 97 days, from May 19 to August 24, 2026, before the reading turned positive. Over that period, Bitcoin had closed at $64,491 on August 17, up from a 90-day low of $62,843, and climbed to $78,317 by August 21.
CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju said on October 30 that the premium had reached a four-year low, with bearish sentiment potentially signaling a turning point, per the same report. Potentially is the operative word. A single prior episode does not make a pattern, and the price recovered in that case after the discount had already been running for months.
What does this mean for an accredited investor?
Treat the premium as one input, not a verdict. If you hold Bitcoin directly or through a spot ETF, the ETF flow and net asset figures tell you more about institutional and advisor behavior than a 0.13% exchange gap does. If you are weighing a first position, the more useful question is how much of your portfolio you could watch fall by another large amount without changing your plans. Bitcoin is speculative and can lose most of its value.
Regulation is the other variable that can shift U.S. demand. Our breakdown of what the CLARITY Act means for institutional crypto investors covers the rules that could change who is allowed to buy and how.
Common mistakes when reading the premium
The first mistake is treating the streak count as a fact when it is a function of the data source. A 38-day and a 61-day reading describe the same market.
The second is ignoring size. A gap of 0.13% is narrow enough that arbitrage and stablecoin pricing can account for much of it, so "U.S. investors stopped buying" is a bigger claim than the number supports.
The third is reading the discount as a buy signal. Ki Young Ju's turning-point comment was a possibility, and no source here says the price will rise.
FAQ
Have U.S. investors stopped buying Bitcoin?
Not necessarily. The discount and $1.28 billion in weekly ETF outflows point to softer U.S. demand, per 24/7 Wall St. Yahoo Finance notes the narrow gap may understate quiet over-the-counter buying, so the picture is incomplete.
Should I sell Bitcoin now or wait?
No source here answers that, and this article is educational, not advice. The discount is a thin signal. Decide based on your position size, your time horizon and the loss you could accept, and consult a qualified financial professional.
Is a negative Coinbase premium a buy signal?
No source says so. CryptoQuant's CEO suggested bearish sentiment could signal a turning point, per 24/7 Wall St. In the May to August 2026 stretch, price rose only after the discount had lasted months.
Why do some sites say 38 days and others 61 or 64?
Each uses its own price data and thresholds. CoinGlass counted 38 days as of October 31, Coinbase Markets counted 61 by November 6, and a separate analysis counted 64 by November 8.
One thing to do today
Look up the Coinbase premium on two different trackers and write down the reading, the date and the source for each. If they disagree, you have just seen why a single headline number should not drive a decision.
