Anthropic's Junk Rating and the Bitcoin Debate
TL;DR: Kroll Bond Rating Agency (KBRA) gave Anthropic a BB+ rating in June 2026, per Digest AI , which reports it second hand. BB+ is one notch below investment grade. In plain terms, lending to the …

That is the whole news item. The argument that grew around it is more interesting, and it touches the portfolio you probably already own.
I signed off on more than 1,000 QA jobs in the Navy, and the habit stuck: I read the underwriting before I read the pitch. A credit rating is underwriting made public, so it's worth reading closely.
What did the rating actually cover?
I haven't seen KBRA's own release, so I'm treating those figures as second-hand.
The structure still matters. Subordinated lenders get repaid after senior lenders if the company stumbles. So I ask the same two questions I ask of any private deal: where do I stand if things go wrong, and what am I paid to stand there?
| Item | What is reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| KBRA rating on Anthropic | BB+, one notch below investment grade | Digest AI |
| Outlook and timing | Stable outlook, assigned June 2026 | Digest AI |
| Basis for the rating | Limited financial disclosures | Digest AI |
The table holds only what I could trace to a page I read.
Why are Bitcoin people involved?
Because the story is bigger than one company. Adam Back framed Bitcoin as the hurdle rate, according to a VeilSwap summary of the story. I couldn't open the original BeInCrypto piece or Back's own post, so treat this as second-hand. The idea is that every investment should be judged against what you could earn by holding Bitcoin instead.
I don't accept that framing as written. A hurdle rate you can't rely on is a strange yardstick.
The bond side of the argument is easier to check. FINRA explains that when interest rates rise, existing bond prices fall, so an investor who sells before maturity can take a loss.
Is Anthropic really a junk credit?
Barely. Digest AI reports that KBRA assigned the BB+ with a stable outlook in June 2026. One notch from investment grade. I haven't seen KBRA's own rating release, so the rating itself is reported second-hand here.
One caution from that same summary site: KBRA reportedly worked from limited financial disclosures, because Anthropic did not provide full figures like free cash flow or EBITDA. Treat the rating as a first read rather than a full audit, and verify before you lean on it.
What does it mean for you?
It means the safe side of your portfolio deserves the same scrutiny as the risky side. If you hold bonds through a 60/40 fund, ask what rising interest rates do to the price of what you own.
The same downside-first question applies to private credit, where you are always choosing a place in the line and a price for standing there. I covered that in New York Life's tokenized high-yield bond fund. Sponsors will show you the yield first. Ask for the tranche, the rating basis and what sits above you.
If you want the equity side of the Anthropic story, read the investor read on its leaked IPO filing and what its Series H deal tells angels. For how a company's debt and its data-center commitments connect, see the TeraWulf lease analysis.
Common mistakes
The first mistake is treating a rating as a prediction. A rating is an agency's opinion of default risk at one date, and this one was set in June 2026.
The second is reading one debate as a trade signal. A Bitcoin advocate's argument is a position, and I'd weigh it the way I weigh a sponsor's pitch deck: interesting, interested and unproven.
The third is assuming bonds are safe because they are bonds. FINRA notes that a bond with a duration of 10 would be expected to fall about 10 percent if rates rise 1 percentage point.
FAQ
What does BB+ mean? BB+ is one notch below investment grade, per Digest AI. Lending to the borrower carries greater credit risk than lending to higher-rated companies.
Why does an AI company's credit rating matter to Bitcoin investors? Adam Back used the rating to argue Bitcoin is the hurdle rate, per a VeilSwap summary. Whether that persuades bond investors is still an open question.
Does the rating make Bitcoin a better bet than bonds? Nothing in the sources I read shows that. I'd treat Bitcoin as speculative.
Was the rating based on full financials? Reportedly not. Digest AI says KBRA worked from limited disclosures, without figures like free cash flow or EBITDA.
